Welcome to Bream. Freshwater bream are commonly known as tilapia in most of the world. Generally bream would be known to come from Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe near Victoria falls boarderline with Zambia.
We specialize in what is known as Mozambique tilapia also a similar species to the kariba bream. They grow up to a size of about 35cm to 40cm in length and they do get larger under good conditions. We stock small fingerlings to larger specimens.
Bream for aquaponics is becoming a growing interest in the Western Cape. The fish do survive our winters but water temperatures around 7c degrees is dangerous to the fish.
The fish breeding season starts in spring through to the summer months. Our business is to supply freshwater live fish. Once we all grow and consume our own fish this will help with an ever decreasing sea fish population. We do take orders and only sell fish on a first come serve basis. If I have stock today and you do not collect there is no guarantee they will be here the next week. Here today gone tomorrow.
With the growing interest around keeping your own fish and aquaponics. This is the ideal option. The fish will (should) breed and once you have good numbers you can eat them reducing your need to buy fish from the supermarket. Fish from your home is lets say 100% guaranteed fresher than your local market.
The answer is simple. The fish are hardy and in my experience withstand worse levels than that of koi and other pond fish. They are also able to tollerate higher levels of salty water levels. In our ponds there are no mosquito larvae, any bugs and small critters that enter the water do not normally escape. If you have lots of plants the fish do feed off these as well reducing their feeding costs.
If you have a small pond with a few fish. A few plants and regular feeding will be fine for the fish. In our experience the main concern is the king fisher and cormorants. A pool net or cover would then need to be used to prevent them from eating your fish. Ph levels are ideally in the range of 7 up to around 8.5 reading. If you move fish into a vastly different ph this can kill them.
This is a good fish to keep in the western cape as it is more tollerant to the colder waters than the nile tilapia. Specifically for aquaponics use they are easy to keep. If you do by chance ever get a sick looking fish, remove it and keep it in a seperate water system. This way you can preserve your main stock without a bacteria running rampant through your whole stock. Easy for the beginner to expert fish keeper.
With feeding of the fish you can feed them once a day. Once the fish have stopped feeding you should stop feeding more feed as the uneaten feed will rot and start to poison the water system. We generally feed the fish up to three times a day around the same times so the fish are better feeders. Fry should only be fed certain amounts as they can perish due to over feeding.
If you do keep rare or exotic plants this may not be the fish species for you. They will eat algae and plant life in the pond. If you want to preserve your plants its recommended to feed them regularly. If you need plants we have a local contact who suppies in the area.
The feeding of the fish should be done a regular times of day so the fish are human aware and do not stress and hide every time you feed them. Smaller fish (fry) should be fed sparingly as they are known to keep eating until they perish.
The breeding period is generally from spring through summer months and only become agressive toward other fish when defending their offspring. If you want to breed them sooner water trmperatures in the range of 24 to 26 degrees should get them breeding.
Ok so a fingerling is pretty much that. Fry are considered to be 0-3cm sized and fingerlings are in the range of 4-8cm sized. When in doubt pull out your tape measure. We only sell fry from 1-3cm as they are hardier when a little bigger. For ponds we recommend 4-8cm fish sizes.
These fish grow fast and can gain up to two grams per day on a high protein feed, and slow down on growth rate as they get larger. During the winter periods the fish also tend to slow on eating. Keep an eye on feeding as they do not consume as much during the colder months.
A regular question is "I have frogs will they eat my fish"?. Simple answer is yes. The frog will only eat what it can fit in its mouth. If you have fish fry then most critters in the pond will try to eat them. If you have medium sized fish then the answer is "no" frogs will not eat them.
